## Story

14 seconds to feel you're moving. Shake the camera, and it's 7.

In 2003, Stephen Palmisano and his colleagues flew people through a cloud of dots on a big screen. They held a button for as long as they felt they were moving. When the camera itself jittered, near dots jumped further than far ones, the way they do when a real camera moves, and the feeling started in about half the time. When they shifted the whole picture by the same amount instead, like a TV shake, it did nothing. The cost: in ten-minute runs, a bobbing view nearly doubled how sick people said they felt.

The wood, the snow, the lab and the stand-in are our own models, built and lit in code.

Shake the camera, not the picture. Smooth, or shaken?
