## Story

Accident or on purpose? Check the speed.

Slowed down, the same tackle looks deliberate. In 2016, Caruso, Burns and Converse showed people a real NFL tackle at normal speed or slowed down twice, and a store camera's video of a robbery shooting. Slowed, the act looked more intentional: viewers felt the actor had more time to decide, even when they were told how much time had passed. In simulated juries, slow motion quadrupled the odds of starting deliberations ready to convict. The study begins with a 2009 murder trial in Philadelphia, where the jury saw the video slowed down.

Showing both speeds shrank the effect, but not to zero. A separate 2018 study found slowed clips felt calmer: people breathed slower, and their heart rate didn't change.

The field, the stand-ins and the lens are our own, built and lit in code.

Has a slow-motion replay ever changed your mind?
