How Cameras

This camera keeps pace with her, under the water. How?

Story

It rides a rail on the bottom of the pool. Garrett Brown, who invented the Steadicam, came up with MobyCam for NBC at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992: in his words, a little black submarine, pulled along the floor of lane three on a cable. The first one had no motor. Brown cranked it by hand, about 19 miles over the Games by his count. Now a motor winds the reel, and two people fly it: a driver and an operator. At the end of the pool it eases to a stop.

Why go under? Brown: "everything important in swimming takes place under the water."

The pool, the swimmer and the submarine are our own models, built and lit in code.

Where would you watch from: above, or under?

Music: our own, played on GarageBand instruments. Sounds: made by us.
