## Story

Tron looked machine-made. So a programmer who worked on it invented noise.

In 1981 Ken Perlin was working on Tron at MAGI in New York, and everything, he said, looked machine-like. The obvious fix, wrapping a photo of real marble round each shape, was out: MAGI's computers had too little memory to hold detailed pictures. So in 1983 he wrote a function that looks random but isn't. Pin a random arrow to every corner of a grid, let each point blend its nearest arrows, and the same point always gives the same answer, with bumps all about one size that an artist can steer. On its own it is soft grey blobs. Stacked at every size and folded where it crosses zero, it becomes what he called turbulence. Let turbulence push plain stripes sideways, and you get marble: not a picture, a recipe. He published it in 1985, didn't patent it, and in 1997 the Academy gave him a Technical Achievement Award. His verdict: movies look better now.

Noise came after Tron, not in it. The sphere, the grid and the marble here are our own code.

Which movie trick should we take apart next?
