## Story

How do Tetris pros move pieces this fast? Holding the button never could.

NES Tetris (Nintendo, 1989) looks at your controller once a frame, about 60 times a second, and keeps only what changed: a button counts as a fresh press when it is down at this look and was up at the last one. Every fresh press of left or right moves the piece one cell. Hold the button and you get one press, then the game's own repeat: it waits 16 frames (about a quarter of a second), then moves the piece every 6 frames, ten cells a second and no faster. Pushed against a wall, the repeat stays charged.

From level 29 a piece falls a row every frame and lands in about a third of a second, so holding can't get it to the far wall. Players call it the kill screen. Hypertappers vibrate one thumb more than ten times a second. In 2020 Cheez started rolling: the thumb rests on the pad and the other hand's fingers drum the back of the controller up into it, so every strike is a fresh press. The game can count one every other frame at most, 30 a second, because a press needs a look with the button up in between: down at every look is one long hold, not 60 presses.

In December 2023 Willis Gibson (Blue Scuti), 13, rolled to level 157, where the game crashed: as HydrantDude found, the score sums there take so long that the game runs out of time in a frame. On his stream: "I can't feel my fingers."

Our own simplified version, drawn in code and shown slowed down in places: every piece's moves run the game's own rule and numbers frame by frame. The hands and the pad are ours, not the NES controller. Not affiliated with or endorsed by Nintendo or The Tetris Company.

Which game's controls should we open up next?
