## Story

This waterfall in Terraria never stops pouring. So why doesn't the lake above it ever run dry?

Real water would. In our own simple version of water, open the lake's edge and it pours over the cliff until it's empty and the valley below is flooded. In April 2013, months before waterfalls came out in Terraria 1.2, a player worried about exactly that: one half block in the wrong place, and half their world under water.

Redigit, Terraria's creator, answered the same day: "Waterfalls are just a graphical effect, so there is no need to worry about flooding." The stream is a picture of water, drawn over empty air. In his words from 2021: "Making them come off half blocks was a good amount of work!" Where a lake touches a half block, the game paints a stream from its edge down to the ground, and not one drop leaves the lake.

He called it "a lot of hard work (36 hour venture) but probably the most fun." How did he stay awake? "Caffeine and determination." Asked in 2021 what he is most proud of in Terraria: "I am really proud of how waterfalls turned out."

The blocks, the water and the debug view in this film are our own simplified version, built in code.

Which game's hidden trick should we cut open next?
