## Story

Why does looking at the monster in Amnesia make everything worse?

In Amnesia: The Dark Descent (Frictional Games, 2010) you can't fight. You have a lantern and your sanity, and sanity drains in the dark, at horrible sights and when you see a monster. When Frictional released the game's code in 2020, it showed what "see" means: within 35 meters and inside your view, the game draws five lines from your eyes to the monster, to its middle, both sides, high and low. If two get through, you've seen it, and sanity drops.

The same check decides when a wandering monster can leave. At the end of its walk it switches off only if you can't see it and it's over 10 meters away. Watch it, and it stays.

So what does an empty meter do? Early on it had teeth: low sanity hurt your health, and some players were stuck there for long stretches. Creative director Thomas Grip wrote that for "a big chunk" of players it made the game "almost unplayable". So, in his words, "we removed all challenge from the sanity system and it just became a feature with few gameplay implications." In Normal mode an empty meter knocks you down and you get up again, and if it stays low too long the code quietly tops it back up. (Hard Mode is the exception: there, the code lets an empty meter kill.)

Players didn't know. Grip: "players made up their own theories of how it worked, and the lack of information made them more frightened about it." And: "Sometimes, making something game-y just destroys the feeling that you're after."

The castle, the monster and the walk are our own simplified version of those rules, run in code.

Did you ever look on purpose?
