How To Run It

Gritty plates? The tablet never left its door.

Premieres Sun, Nov 8. Follow to see it first.

Story

A chopping board stood in front of the detergent dispenser, so its lid couldn't open in the wash. The tablet stayed in, and the sauce and grit stayed on.

1. Scrape, don't rinse: the sensor reads how dirty the water is
2. Clean the filter: check it after every wash
3. Plates apart, not overlapping, so water and detergent reach every surface
4. Pots and pans face down in the lower rack, so no water collects in them
5. Big items to the sides: boards and serving plates along the edge, never in front of the dispenser's lid
6. Cups and bowls open end down on top, to clean and drain
7. Turn the spray arm: it must turn freely
8. Tablet in flat, then shut the lid until it clicks: it opens by itself in the wash
9. Same load: clean, and the lid hangs open, the tablet gone

Rinsing first is the common habit. The maker's manual (Bosch) says not to pre-rinse under running water, just remove large remnants of food, and Consumer Reports adds that a sensor washes lighter when the water looks clean, which can leave bits of food behind. The film follows the manual. For tomato and other acidic foods that can stain if they sit, Electrolux suggests a rinse or the machine's own Rinse cycle. Dispensers differ between brands, so check where yours opens.

Shown on a generic 60 cm built-in dishwasher, in the class of a Bosch Serie 4; the machine is our own drawing.

Which machine should we do next?
