## Story

Nothing in this sea moves sideways. Watch the red marble.

Eighteen equal cams on one shaft, each turned a little later than the one before. Every cam lifts one rod, and the rods can only rise and fall. But the tops lean east, so the wave that runs along them carries a marble with it, about one slat for every eighth of a turn, uphill. At the top a tray tips it onto the horizon wire, it rolls back west like a small sun, drops onto the jetty and waits for the next wave. The woman in the boat watches it every time, until the belt starts to squeak. Stay for the end.

Every knock and every music-box note is timed by the machine's own crank.
