## Story

Where will the red marble land?

A bean machine with no job. Small glass marbles drop one at a time through ten rows of brass pins. At every pin a marble goes left or right, like a coin toss, and nothing aims it. Still the middle bins fill and the edges stay low, because most paths take about as many lefts as rights. Once a cycle a cam tips the trapdoor under the bins, a bucket chain carries the marbles back to the top, and two tin mice watch the red one. But the trapdoor's hinge is getting stiff, one bucket is loose, and the lamp has started to flicker.

Every knock and every music-box note is timed by the machine itself.
