## Story

About 1,400 years ago, a volcano buried a village and saved its sauna.

Joya de Cerén, El Salvador, was a Maya farming village. One early evening at harvest time, with the supper fires lit, the ground shook and everybody ran. No bodies have ever been found.

At the edge of the village stood a small domed sweat bath. You crawled in on hands and knees: a bench, a firebox of lava stones, water poured on the stones for steam.

Then the volcano threw rocks of fire. Two of them punched straight through the dome. It should have been the end. But through those two holes the ash poured in, filled the dome and held it up. Without the holes, the weight of the ash would have crushed it.

In 1976 a bulldozer levelling ground for grain silos cut into the village. In 2012 an exact copy of the sweat bath was built, and inside, the researchers noticed something: the room hums at 64 hertz, about two octaves below middle C.

Different continent, different people. Nobody copied anybody. Fire, stones, water, a small dark room: humans keep finding the same thing.
