## Story

Greenland, 1949. In a Norse farmhouse, the smallest room is half filled with stones.

Several hundred of them, the size of apples or oranges, every one marked by fire. The man digging is the Danish archaeologist Christen Vebæk. Four farms in the inland lake district of Vatnahverfi had one: a big stone stove, about one and a half metres long. Vebæk had no doubt. Bath houses: Norse steam baths.

But a stove that size needs a lot of fuel, in a land of birch and willow scrub. And a Norwegian book from around 1250, the King's Mirror, says Greenland's richest farmers tried to sow grain. So later scientists wrote down two answers: a bath stove, or a kiln for drying grain.

Up north, one hot room could do both jobs. An old Swedish text says that to dry the malt, you first heat the kiln, or the bath house. And in the Kalevala, a new bride is told to go often to the sauna and mind the malt. Don't let the cat sit on the sprouts.

Steam bath or grain dryer: which would you have built?
