Saunantakaa

In German saunas, there is a rule: no swimsuits.

Story

For many visitors, this is like a party invitation that says: dress code, none. There is a war about this. Swimsuit, or naked?

The German reason is hygiene: a towel under your whole body, and nothing else. Other saunas have the opposite rule: swimwear only.

And in Finland? A Finn's first sauna comes, on average, at four and a half months old. Nobody packs a swimsuit. Families bathe together; from the teenage years, men and women usually go separately.

In the Netherlands, naked is the rule too. Then some saunas added swimsuit hours, and new people started coming.

So a swimsuit is not wrong. It is just one more thing to dry. Finland told UNESCO that in the sauna, people remove their social status with their clothing. The swimsuit is up to you.

Which camp are you in?
