## Story

One line splits Finland: west of it, the birch whisk is a vihta. East, a vasta.

It is soda or pop, except you hit yourself with it. Finland's oldest word war.

Finnish news held a poll: vasta 10,439, vihta 10,180. Inside the famous margin of error.

So check the Kalevala: vasta again and again, vihta not once. And the first vihta ever written down? Adam and Eve's fig leaf. So the east got the epic, and the west got the Bible.

Finnish news said it best: at least the word sauna unites the people that vihta and vasta divide.

Vihta or vasta? Which side of the line are you on?

Sources: the Porvoo-Oulu line: fi.wikipedia "Vasta", citing Savon Sanomat 24 Jun 2011 and Tiede 2013; both words are standard Finnish. Yle Saunapäivä reader poll, 7 Jun 2019 (vasta 10,439, vihta 10,180; "inside that famous margin of error"). The Kalevala, Lönnrot 1849 (Project Gutenberg): vasta as the bath whisk on 15 lines, vihta on none. Kaisa Häkkinen, "Saako olla vihta vai vasta?", Tiede 12 Sep 2013: the word vihta is first written in Agricola's Fall story, Genesis 3:7 ("niin he sidoit fiikunalehtiä yhteen ja teit heillens vihtat"); as the sauna whisk's name it entered written Finnish in 1702 (Florinus). Yle, Tanja Perkkiö, 22 Jun 2012: "Sauna sentään sanana yhdistää kansan, jonka vihta ja vasta jakavat."
