Saunantakaa

Sauna safety, in two words: no alcohol.

Story

It is like the sign at the pool: no running. Nobody loves it. Everybody knows why.

Online, there is a war. Sauna beer: tradition, or danger? The tradition camp has old books on its side. In the Kalevala, the mistress of the North greases a sauna door with beer so the hinges won't creak. And in old folk belief, sauna beer was an offering for the sauna spirit. Notice something? In these stories, nobody drinks it.

Now, the serious part. In Finland, about half of the people who die in saunas had been drinking. Alcohol in the heat raises the risk of fainting and of an uneven heartbeat. And a Finnish forensic doctor says many sauna deaths could be avoided if nobody was left alone.

So, tradition or danger? Sauna beer is a real tradition. It just waits until after: after the last round and the last swim. And never sauna alone.

Sauna deaths in Finland are rare: fewer than 2 per 100,000 people a year. No alcohol before or during sauna or cold water. Never sauna alone.
