## Story

Scientists found a heat no human survives for long. Finns sit in it every Saturday.

It is called wet-bulb: a thermometer in a wet cloth, the coolest your sweat can make you. Above 35 degrees wet-bulb, said the theory, the body cannot get rid of its own heat (Sherwood and Huber, PNAS 2010). Then a lab at Penn State tested young, healthy people, and the real limit came lower: about 30.5 in humid heat, lower still in hot, dry air (Vecellio and colleagues, 2022). Some coasts on Earth have already touched 35.

Now the sauna: 80 to 90 degrees. In there, sweat cannot keep up, and your core temperature climbs to 38, even 39. And yet researchers call the sauna well tolerated, from childhood to old age. How? Because the limit is about staying. After ten minutes you do the one thing a heat wave does not allow: you get up, and you leave. The trick was never the degrees. It is the minutes.

In Finland, between rounds, we sit on the porch. A heat wave has no porch.

Feel unwell? Leave. No alcohol in the sauna.

How long is your round?
