Some saunas have a rule: silence, please.

Story

It is the quiet carriage on the train, only hotter. Online, there is a war: silent sauna, or social sauna?

The quiet camp has old rules on its side. In old Finland: no swearing in the sauna, no singing, no speaking ill of anyone. Misbehave, people believed, and the sauna spirit would give you a beating.

But the talking camp has history too. The official report of the Helsinki Olympics, 1952, notes that the South African team leaders held their important conferences in the sauna. And today's sauna boom is social: in 2023 Britain counted about 45 public saunas; three years later, over 600.

So, can you talk in the sauna? Read the old rules again. They are not against talking, only against noise and gossip. So talk. Quietly. And not about anyone. Most Finns will still choose silence. For us, that is a conversation.

Which camp are you in?
