## Story

One silk thread guarded this garden. A knight snapped it.

High above Bolzano, the story goes, the dwarf king Laurin grew a garden of roses on the rocks of the Rosengarten, with no wall around it, only one thread of silk. Knights rode up from Verona, broke the thread and trampled the roses. Laurin put on his cap of invisibility, but the roses swayed where he walked and gave him away. Taken prisoner, he cursed his garden: no one should see it again, not by day and not by night. The roses turned to stone. But he forgot the moment that is neither day nor night.

So at twilight, for a few minutes, the roses bloom again. In Ladin, the old language of these valleys, it is called enrosadira: turning pink. The pale dolomite catches the low red light of sunset like a screen. Look east from Bolzano on a clear evening, or watch it from the Schlernhaus, the Rifugio Bolzano on the Schlern, as in the photograph at the end.

Where did you first see the mountains turn pink?

The dwarf king, the silk thread and the knights of Verona come from the 13th-century poem Laurin. The curse that forgot the twilight was first written down by Karl Felix Wolff in the early 1900s, from a Ladin tale. Retold in our own words.
